Just as it is impossible to see your face in turbulent waters, so also your sprit, unless it is clear of alien thoughts, is not able to pray to God in contemplation."
That is the precise reason for times of silence. Silence is a lost art in our society made up of noise. Every TV program is jam packed with so much clatter you can hardly keep your wits with you at all. Music, for the most part, has likewise become a bombardment of the ear drums. Young people have their car radios on so loud you can hear them a block away. How long do you suppose it will be before those young people will need hearing aids?
Silence, is that time just before we hear the voice of God....Silence is the area through which the spirit must travel, cleaning out the dissonance of life as we go, so that God who is waiting there all the while just for us to notice can fill us. Fill us he will, if we give him the opportunity, but it cannot happen by accident. Only by a planned period of total and complete silence is God going to come and enrich your spirit or mine.
To open oneself to God intentionally is different from "spending time alone. Being intentional about it is what counts. We know, God is always with us; but it is in turning to God, without words, and allowing ourselves to be in the mystery of silence that we begin to see the world differently, and by the "world" I mean the outer world but more particularly the inner world, that place within where Spirit and spirit can commune. That says it all, dear friends.
Will you just see if you can sit in complete silence for 15 minutes to give our wonderful and majestic creator an opportunity to give you the greatest gift that is available to all, if only we will give him a chance.
In closing, my prayer is that you will give the silent communion a try. What do you say?
